Research

Without research, there would be no progress. Research is therefore crucial to providing better care for patients both now and into the future. Associate Professor Grummet believes that it is the practising urological surgeon who is in the best position to lead clinical urological research.

The experience of daily clinical practice shows us where patient care is lacking and leads us to question how we might improve it. With the exponential rise of technological advances and the power of collaboration, we now have the opportunity to make great strides forward in a short period of time.

Inspired by the clinical research he experienced at The Prostate Centre at Vancouver General Hospital, A/Prof Grummet has since presented widely and published on his research projects. His areas of interest have been on the benefits of surgical treatment of high risk prostate cancer and on active surveillance for low risk prostate cancer.

Recognising that most of the controversies surrounding prostate cancer start with its diagnosis, A/Prof Grummet has now turned his research focus onto prostate cancer diagnostics including MRI and biopsy, and supervises Master of Surgery and Bachelor of Medical Science researchers in this field. Topics under investigation include the risk of biopsy sepsis, diagnostic accuracy, the role of MRI-targeted biopsy, and PSMA PET scanning.

A/Prof Grummet and his research students have created one of the world's largest, high quality granular databases on prostate MRI.

2015- : Principal investigator and original concept author of Painfree TRUS B, a randomised control trial comparing novel methods of pain relief for patients during prostate biopsy. Awarded competitive grant funding of nearly $600,000 from Cancer Australia and PCFA.

2014-7 : Co-investigator for the ASTROID trial, assessing a decision aid for active surveillance in patients diagnosed with low risk prostate cancer.

2014-8: Site investigator for the ENZAMET trial, a randomised control trial assessing the therapeutic effect of Enzalutamide on newly-diagnosed metastatic prostate cancer.

2013-4: Co-investigator for the Duodart and sexual dysfunction trial, an international randomized placebo-controlled study of the effects of Duodart on sexual function.

2012-4: Co-investigator for the Diphereline and LUTS study, a national observational study of the effect of LHRH agonist on LUTS in men with advanced prostate cancer.

2010- : Site investigator at Alfred Hospital site for PRIAS, an international observational study in active surveillance for prostate cancer.

Master of Surgery

2001-4: Enrolled in a Master of Surgery. Conducted full-time research in the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery of University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas in 2001. The techniques of laser tissue welding and use of biological adhesives were investigated for performing the anastomosis (join) between the bladder and urethra in radical prostatectomy. The longer-term follow-up project was conducted at University of Melbourne Department of Veterinary Science.

The thesis, entitled Novel Techniques for Vesico-Urethral Anastomosis in Radical Prostatectomy, was accepted and the degree of Master of Surgery conferred in 2004.
